所谓“点铁成金”，既可以指技艺高超的作者，用寻常的词语或化用前人的佳句，营造出精妙绝伦的意境。也可以形容文坛高手修改文章，擅长从朴实的文字中发掘出熠熠生辉的亮点。

英文中“turning a crude poem or essay into a literary gem”这个说法，意指用平实的语言或转用前人的词句，创造出新颖美妙的效果。词语同样可以用来形容一位成就卓著的文人如何编辑文稿。只经过细微的调整，他就能让一篇原本普通的文章焕发出夺目的光彩。
