2026年8月1日的北京时间里,一则消息引起了广泛的关注。阿里巴巴集团董事会主席、同时担任NBA布鲁克林篮网队老板的蔡崇信, alongside his wife Wu Minghua Clara Wu Tsai, via a joint statement, announced the end of their nearly 30-year marriage.

distinct from the dramatic expectations surrounding the separation of wealthy couples, which usually involves disputes over shares and assets, this parting had a different feel altogether – “business as usual.”

spokespeople for both sides stated the split was an “amicable separation.” They clarified that their decision was reached on a foundation of mutual respect and shared negotiation, with their relationship evolving over the years into that of “jointly managing enterprises and raising children as partners.”

the statement made it a point to specify: Joe Tsai would continue to hold the position of Chairman of Brooklyn Sports Entertainment (BSE) and Chairman of the Brooklyn Nets; Wu Minghua would retain her role as Vice Chairman of BSE and Chairman of the WNBA New York Liberty; their stakes in Alibaba and positions on its board would remain unaffected, with no plans for stock sales. They even had plans for the future – intended to gradually involve their three adult children in the management of the family’s sports enterprises.

they married in 1996,and have three sons: Jacob,Alex, and Dash. Currently,Joe Tsai resides primarily in Hong Kong, while Wu Minghua makes her home in the United States.

hailing from a legal family background,Joe Tsai’s career path reads like a classic case of a Chinese elite phenomenon.

Joe Tsai’s grandfather,Cai Liucheng, was a prominent lawyer in Shanghai, who provided legal services to杜月笙 during his heyday. In 1949,his family moved to Taiwan. His father,Cai Zhong, was a Yale Law School graduate with a Ph.D. in Law,and in 1965 started Taiwan’s first partnership private law firm – Chang Zheng. Growing up among the legal environment of his father’s firm,Joe Tsai naturally followed in his footsteps, attending Yale, where he earned a law degree from the Yale Law School in 1990.

From Wall Street to Hong Kong. After graduation,Joe Tsai joined a top New York law firm,Sullivan & Cromwell,as a tax lawyer. In 1993,he shifted to the private equity field, and in 1995 joined Investor AB,a part of the Wallenberg family investment group,as a Vice President and Senior Investment Manager, based in Hong Kong.

Giving up a six-figure salary for a monthly salary of 500 yuan to join Alibaba. In 1999,Joe Tsai was introduced to马云 during a visit to Hangzhou. In a simple residential building beside West Lake Garden,he saw 10 toothbrushes placed beside the sink – that’s where the founding team worked. Inspired by Ma’s passion and vision,Joe Tsai gave up a salary of about $700,000 a year to join Alibaba, which had only a dozen or so employees at the time,on a salary of only 500 yuan per month.

His first “gift” to the company was standardized operations: he got the 18 founders to sign contracts in English that fully complied with international conventions, founding the team’s rights, responsibilities, and interests in formal legal documents. Later, using his network in the investment world,Joe Tsai secured $5 million in angel investment led by Goldman Sachs for Alibaba, which in turn led to the introduction of SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son,a financing round that would change Alibaba’s destiny.

After Alibaba’s IPO,Joe Tsai served as CFO until 2013,and as Executive Vice President until September 2023. In June 2023,facing financial pressures at Alibaba, the 59-year-old Joe Tsai took over from Zhang Young as the third Chairman of the Alibaba Group, returning to the forefront. At the time,Alibaba was undergoing its “1+6+N” organizational reform, with core businesses facing restructuring. The market environment and industry competition brought pressure on performance. The return of the 59-year-old Joe Tsai to the frontline was also interpreted by the market as a signal of Alibaba’s confidence in its new track like AI,strengthening its strategic resolve.

According to Forbes data,Joe Tsai’s personal net worth is about $13.3 billion (约合人民币960亿元),ranking him among the top three wealthy people in Canada. His disclosed pre-tax compensation for 2026 is approximately 42.27 million yuan.

Wu Minghua is far from being a “woman behind a rich man,”rather, she is an independent female entrepreneur, sports investor, and philanthropist.

Noble background. Wu Minghua’s grandfather was a well-known Taiwanese politician and the first appointed Mayor of Taipei, who founded the衙门报,Tainan Textile, and Global Cement among other enterprises. Her father,Wu Demin, was a计量经济学家 and served as the Director of the Economics Department at the University of Kansas.

Outstanding educational background. Wu Minghua attended Lawrenceville School in the United States, and completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Stanford University(国际关系学士,国际政策研究硕士),and later obtained an MBA from Harvard University.

Professional career. After graduation, she joined American Express, where she advanced to senior management positions in the Asia-Pacific region. She also served as the Hong Kong Operations Manager for Taobao.

The other half of the sports empire. In 2019,when Cai Tsai acquired the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty for $2.35 billion,Wu Minghua
