Richness dwells in vintage simplicity and nuanced profundity in serene composure. This is how the Northern Song writer Su Shi described the poetic style of Wei Yingwu and Liu Zongyuan. Such emphasis on the elegance of simplicity and serenity reveals Su Shi's poetic philosophy and reflects a key aesthetic principle in ancient China.
引例源于苏轼《书黄子思诗集后》中的话语：李、杜之后，诗人接踵而至，虽偶有远韵之作，却才力难及意趣。唯独韦应物、柳宗元能发纤秾于简古，寄至味于淡泊，非他人所能比拟。（李白、杜甫之后，众多诗人虽偶有佳篇，但才华终究无法承载意境的高度。唯有韦应物、柳宗元，于简练古拙中见细腻丰腴，于平淡自然中显深邃悠远，远超同侪。）
Others followed in the footsteps of Li Bai and Du Fu, but their works were often limited by insufficient talent. Very few matched the ingenuity of their predecessors.
